That cuts both ways: a young shepherd can get properly tired out on a climb up toward the Crest Trail, while a fourteen-year-old lab is far happier on a flat, shaded loop under the deodars on Santa Rosa Ave. I adjust pace, route and distance to the dog in front of me rather than running the same circuit for everyone. I cover both sides of Lake Ave, from West Altadena and La Viña across to the Meadows, Janes Village and the east end near Eaton Canyon.
